Prenatal diagnosis

Prenatal diagnosis is a set of medical tests and methods used to assess the health of the foetus in the womb. Its main aim is the early detection of congenital malformations, genetic disorders or other conditions.

What can be diagnosed?
  • Chromosomal abnormalities: most commonly Down’s, Edwards’ or Patau’s syndrome
  • Structural congenital malformations: clefts, heart defects or organ anomalies
  • Genetic disorders: metabolic disorders or hereditary conditions in the family
