Cardiotocograph – CTG – monitor
A cardiotocography scan allows us to monitor the baby’s current condition in the womb. Specifically, it monitors the foetal heart rate, foetal movements and the mother’s uterine contractions.
During pregnancy, we always carry out this procedure at the first antenatal appointment (check-in) and subsequently on a selective basis at further appointments, depending on the individual risks associated with the pregnancy. After the due date, we carry out the procedure twice a week in accordance with the recommended protocol.
During labour, we always perform it when the pregnant woman is admitted to the delivery suite and subsequently depending on her condition and risk. In the active phase of physiological labour, this is usually every 3 hours. In some cases, it is necessary to monitor the baby more frequently or even continuously. It is possible to use a telemetric system with wireless sensors. This system allows for free movement, and even the option of resting in the shower, without the need to interrupt foetal monitoring. The maternity ward has a central monitoring system; all readings are transmitted electronically to a screen in the nurses’ station and are continuously monitored by staff. For monitoring premature babies or babies with growth restriction, we also have a more precise computerised curve reading system (cCTG) available.
