External version
If your baby has not turned into the head-down position by the 36th week of pregnancy, external version – turning the baby into the head-down position – may be an option for you.
This situation occurs in around 4% of pregnancies. If the baby cannot be turned by adjusting the position of your tummy and pelvis, and if other methods do not help, we are ready to assist you.
The doctor will assess your suitability for a version, and if conditions are favourable, an attempt can be made to turn the baby. The success rate ranges from 50–80%, depending on the circumstances.
It is performed as an overnight admission and is a short, usually painless procedure. We carry it out after the 36th week of pregnancy.
A few minutes before the procedure, an intravenous infusion is administered with a preparation to suppress any uterine contractions. The procedure itself is performed by one or two obstetricians. The first manually rotates the foetus in the womb, whilst the second continuously monitors the foetus’s condition using ultrasound. The pregnant woman lies on her back with her legs slightly bent at the knees. The obstetrician stands or sits to the right of the pregnant woman. He places both hands on her abdomen so that one hand is on the foetus’s head and the other on its bottom. Once the abdominal wall and the uterine muscles have relaxed, the obstetrician begins to apply gentle pressure with one palm to push the foetus’s head downwards, towards the pelvic inlet. With the other palm, they gently push the foetus’s bottom upwards towards the pregnant woman’s chest. The condition of the foetus is continuously monitored by ultrasound. Once the procedure is complete, the position of the foetus and the condition of the placenta are checked again by ultrasound, and a cardiotocographic recording of the foetal heart rate is performed. Rh-negative women are given a preparation to prevent the formation of antibodies against the foetus’s red blood cells.
