List of things to take to the maternity ward
Here you will find a list of essential items for you and your baby for the birth.
Documents:
- ID card
- health insurance card
- maternity card
- married women must provide the original marriage certificate
- unmarried or divorced mothers who wish their child to take the father’s surname must provide a certificate of paternity (issued by the registry office) + original birth certificates of both parents
- Mothers who have been divorced for less than one year and do not wish the child to take their former husband’s surname must also provide the divorce decree
- a declaration regarding the child’s name signed by both parents
For the mother:
- Clothing: nightgowns, at least 2 (suitable for breastfeeding – with front fastening), 2 nursing bras, a dressing gown, warm socks, 2 hand towels, a bath towel, slippers (also for your partner)
- toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrush, unscented soap, shower gel, comb
- medicines in their original packaging
- disposable items: bra pads, maternity pads, mesh knickers
- may be useful: compression stockings in case of varicose veins or a planned caesarean section, oak bark gel, your own music for the delivery room, camera, mobile phone and charger
For the baby:
- 5 cloth nappies – versatile use, can also serve as a bath towel
- Your own baby clothes – for photos and the journey home (bear in mind the current weather), have the car seat delivered on the day of discharge
- wet wipes or a washcloth for hygiene during nappy changes
- a small pack of size 1 disposable nappies – just in case; nappies are normally available on the ward
- possibly baby toiletries of your choice, though we have high-quality toiletries available as standard on the ward
