Vaginal birth or caesarean section?

Vaginal birth is the natural way for a baby to be born. The female body is designed for this. It should be the clear preference.

However, there are situations where a vaginal delivery carries more risks than a caesarean section – this constitutes a medical indication for a caesarean section. If the first birth was delivered by caesarean section, a vaginal delivery should always be considered for the second birth, provided the situation allows it even slightly. If a woman has a history of two or more caesarean sections, it is recommended that subsequent pregnancies be delivered by caesarean section again. In exceptional cases, vaginal delivery may be considered after two previous operations.
