Caesarean section

A caesarean section is the most major obstetric procedure. It is performed for various reasons relating to the mother or the baby. It may be planned during pregnancy or carried out as an emergency procedure during labour.

A caesarean section is a major abdominal operation, which accounts for roughly one in five births in this country
A caesarean section is not a pain-free birth. It is not always safer or easier than a vaginal birth. However, it can be a positive experience if we create the right conditions for it.

It is performed only in indicated cases where the health or life of the mother or baby is at risk, or in situations where the risk of vaginal birth outweighs the risk of major surgery. During the birth, the baby is delivered via an incision made through the abdominal and uterine walls.
