Mental health care during the postnatal period

The period around childbirth is often seen as one of the most wonderful times in a person’s life, but in reality it is also a very demanding time, full of changes and hormonal fluctuations.

Around one in five new mothers reports psychological difficulties, which is why our maternity ward strives to ensure they do not go without support. In collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health (NÚDZ), we provide questionnaires in the postnatal ward to assess the risk of psychological difficulties such as the baby blues, postnatal depression, anxiety and psychosis. We then provide women at risk with contacts for direct support, tailored to their needs and preferences. With the help of trained counsellors, most mothers get through this difficult period more quickly and avoid more serious problems.
