Midwife home visits

A visit from a midwife is a form of specialist postnatal care provided in the home. Its aim is to support women during the postnatal period, check their health following childbirth, and provide expert advice.

Every woman who gives birth at our maternity hospital will receive three referral forms upon discharge to use this service during the postnatal period. It is entirely up to her whether she wishes to make use of this service or not. The service is fully covered by health insurance.

If you are interested, please call: 318 641 990 (Mon–Fri 8am–3pm), where you will be given the contact details of a midwife in your region, with whom you can then arrange a visit.

What the visit includes:

 Care for the mother

  • checking the healing of the birth wound
  • assessment of postpartum bleeding and uterine contraction
  • checking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature)
  • breast examination, addressing latching and breastfeeding technique issues
  • Advice on hygiene, sleep, routine, and psychosocial support

Baby care

  • Initial assessment of the newborn
  • growth and development
  • Check of the umbilical stump
  • handling the newborn, bathing, skin care

A visit from a midwife at home does not replace medical care, whether gynaecological or paediatric.
