Weak uterine contractions
Breast milk is the best possible nutrition for your baby. Close contact with your baby – skin-to-skin bonding – not just in the first few hours of life, is the first step towards successful breastfeeding.
Sometimes, during labour, the uterus does not contract strongly enough to allow labour to progress. Initially, we encourage the mother to move around in suitable positions, particularly upright ones, as these can help stimulate the onset of contractions. If this situation persists for too long and the vaginal examination shows no progress, we can help strengthen the contractions by deliberately rupturing the amniotic sac. In cases where uterine activity remains insufficient, even some time after the waters have broken, intravenous oxytocin often helps. If we have exhausted all available options, we proceed to deliver the baby by caesarean section – yet even this option can be a blessing.
