Outpatient birth

An outpatient birth refers to the mother and baby leaving the maternity ward to go home within 72 hours of the birth.

Full-term, healthy newborns who are adapting well after birth are usually discharged around 72 hours after birth.

At the parents’ request, discharge to home care is generally possible at any earlier stage, provided the mother’s and baby’s health permits. In the event of very early discharge of the baby to home care, a paediatric examination is recommended within 24 hours. If you are interested, we recommend timing early discharge after the baby’s 48th hour of life to allow for neonatal laboratory screening. An

outpatient birth entails the parents assuming responsibility for any complications affecting the mother or baby associated with early discharge.
