Why take this course? There are several reasons. During pregnancy, we prepare for childbirth and caring for the baby, but we generally assume that breastfeeding is something that works automatically. However, it is precisely during breastfeeding that we often feel hopelessness, fear, pain and many other unpleasant sensations that complicate this unique stage.
During the course, I aim to provide mums with valuable information covering, amongst other things, the physiology of lactation, the role of hormones, the composition of breast milk, the benefits of breastfeeding for both mum and baby, correct positioning, understanding your baby and their needs, feeding frequency, and how to express and store milk. There is also a practical section where we look at breastfeeding technique, how to tell if the baby is latched on correctly, and we demonstrate several breastfeeding positions. A very important part covers potential complications for both mother and baby, along with general information on how to deal with them.
The whole course lasts 1.5 hours and is supportive and informative. My follow-up support, as a lactation consultant, takes place in your home. Here, I can help you adjust your breastfeeding positions to minimise potential nipple injury and milk retention, and also support you during this truly special time.
